Understanding Blower Vacuum Systems
Understanding Vacuum in HGs
Rule is Inverse of CFM = Lift
CFM=cubic feet per minute
Mercury hg lift= One inch of mercury (hg) vacuum equals 13.59" of water column vacuum lift.
Dynamics= combination of air flow and hg lift.

Lets say you have 400 cfm at 12 hg lift. This means your truckmount can pull 163" of water 400 cubic feet per minute.
The CFM numbers you read about are measured at the machine inlet or at the end of an open hose (no wand). While this number does give some clue as to the machines performance, it's not the CFM that you have during actual use, with a wand on the end of the hose in contact with the carpet (which is harder to measure). When you dry a carpet with an airmover, the breeze you feel is basically pure CFM.

Likewise the lift (which is vacuum and is commonly measured in inches of mercury or inches of water) is measured with the end of the hose completely plugged. It is the maximum static lift (static means no airflow) that the machine produces.

This is what effect the "Dry Time" of your carpets and can ultimately effect the Results of your cleaning which equates to a Happy or Unhappy Customer.
